The natural stone waterproofing against dirt and weathering

A natural stone waterproofing from nanoCare keeps the surface fresh and clean for longer. The stone retains its natural colour without affecting the structure and breathing properties of stone, marble and granite tiles. The treatment is suitable for preventive and refreshing care of all types of natural stone.

How does waterproofing protect natural stone?

Impregnated porcelain stoneware and natural stone does much more than protect against soiling and contamination. The impregnated stone acquires new properties that make its care and use even easier, safer and more pleasant.
Natural stone waterproofingen are durable and protect against UV light and the elements. Anti-slip waterproofingen maintain the shine and improve slip resistance at the same time.

What is the difference between sealing and impregnating?

The natural stone is not completely sealed during waterproofing. In simple terms, it is a partial closure of the stone in order to weaken its sensitive surface properties. Sealing, on the other hand, completely closes the surface of the stone. This full closure corresponds to a varnishing of the natural stone.

Natural stone waterproofing – what it does

Natural stone, such as granite and slate, is extremely popular for use in the home and garden. Untreated, it is very sensitive as a work surface or floor covering. If its surface is completely sealed, for example with a varnish, the natural stone loses its valuable and attractive properties. The waterproofing of natural stone is a successful compromise to improve the resistance, make the stone easier to maintain and at the same time preserve its natural beauty.

  • Reduction of staining
  • Easier maintenance
  • Colour deepening properties
  • Protection against soiling and weathering
  • Food safe protective impregnation for the kitchen

Your advantages at a glance

The leather shoe is a classic. Leather demonstrates a sense of style and is very hard-wearing. The disadvantage: leather is naturally water-permeable, in fact it even attracts water (hydrophilic). If leather is tanned, not all pores are sealed. Especially with shoes, it’s all about breathability. An advantage that becomes a nuisance in wind and weather. The waterproofing gives leather a water-repellent function. Hydrophilic becomes hydrophobic. When it rains, spherical drops form and the water rolls off.

  • Leather becomes water-repellent, waterproofingen are invaluable, especially with suede.
  • Water is often also a carrier of dirt, impurities do not penetrate into the leather after a waterproofing
  • The impregnation preserves the color and extends the durability of the leather

Correct impregnation of tiles made of granite, slate and other types of stone?

A covering that has been thoroughly cleaned with water and is completely dry (residual moisture less than 3 percent) is receptive for the application of the impregnating liquid. The solution is usually applied evenly to the natural stone or porcelain stoneware with a roller, cloth or brush. The application is made diagonally to the laying pattern. Stone is treated at a normal temperature between +10 and +25 degrees Celsius. Excess is removed directly, but at the latest after half an hour of exposure time.

Natural stones with different absorption behaviour

The effectiveness of natural stone waterproofing depends on many factors, including the type of natural stone. With particularly absorbent types of stone, such as marble, the effect of impregnation is less than with less absorbent types of stone, such as granite and slate. A complete sealing of the pores causes a sealing of the stone. When treating natural stone, the agent used is matched to the type of stone and worked in. Treatment can be targeted against water, grease and oil. Food-safe products are used for the treatment of kitchen worktops.

Natural stone care – what to avoid?

The special finish of waterproofing protects the natural stone against oil, grease, dirt and water. Dirt hardly adheres to the impregnated surface. The stone is particularly easy to wipe and a normal wiping care is sufficient. As on untreated stone, substances containing acids, such as vinegar cleaners, should be avoided – because in any case they damage the surface more than they help. Cleaning with high-pressure cleaners or sharp objects also damages the stone.

Care of porcelain stoneware tiles – what is important?

Impregnated porcelain stoneware tiles are an easy-care, insensitive and hard-wearing floor covering. As high-quality ceramics, they already have a high mechanical resistance “by nature” and are particularly resistant to alkalis and acids. A waterproofing is particularly advantageous in areas susceptible to dirt, for single-coloured, very light or very dark porcelain stoneware. With the protective impregnation, the tile becomes even easier to clean, while retaining its colour and surface.

Advantages and disadvantages of impregnated natural stone

Natural stone absorbs and releases moisture through its porous surface. This is one of the most pleasant properties of natural stone indoors, because the natural moisture management of the stone supports the indoor climate. These important and sought-after properties are retained by natural stone after it has been treated. However, they are lost if the stone is completely sealed. Impregnation does not have numerous other advantages over complete sealing.

Advantages:

  • Dirt adheres less easily
  • Less effort for maintenance
  • No smooth surface with increased risk of slipping
  • Moisture and wetness partially roll off
  • Moisture penetrates more slowly
  • In contrast to sealing, the pores remain open for diffusion
  • Colour particles can deepen texture and colour tones

Disadvantages:

  • Complete protection against moisture is not possible
  • Little protection against mechanical scratches or dullness
  • Natural stone is still sensitive to acid after impregnation

These questions are often asked about waterproofing.

Ideally, natural stone waterproofing should be treated after installation. If natural stone tiles or natural stone slabs are grouted, treatment before grouting is recommended.
If the outdoor area is newly laid, the natural stone slabs can already be impregnated before laying. This eliminates the need for a long drying time of the stone.
The waterproofing is done with a soaking treatment. This involves solid but porous materials, such as stone, wood, concrete, paper, textiles. Dissolved, emulsified or dispersed substances are used. After evaporation or drying, these waterproofingagents give the treated surfaces new usage properties.
If you are quick enough and wipe up all stains immediately, you will also enjoy the untreated floor for a long time. Every stone is porous, some types of stone, such as marble, sandstone and limestone more than others. This means that liquid substances penetrate unhindered and are almost impossible to remove once they have stained. Natural stone becomes more robust with a waterproofing. It no longer absorbs liquids completely and is much easier to clean. After treatment, neither the orange juice spilled in the kitchen nor the dripping fat from the barbecue on the terrace will cause permanent damage.
Natural stone waterproofing can be used with underfloor heating without any problems or restrictions. The natural stones retain their very good thermal conductivity.

Did you know…?

… that even the Egyptian pyramids, whose façade was once made of sandstone, as well as many other sights have been provided with a natural stone waterproofing? To prevent the monuments, some of which have been standing in harsh climatic conditions for thousands of years, from deteriorating even further, many of them have already been protected with waterproofingen . This is invisible and is not noticed by the visitor.

Impregnated natural stones are also quite common in historic buildings. In some cases, complete sealing of entire surfaces takes place. Large churches, tiled floors of palaces and other historic buildings are often equipped with floors made of granite, marble or porcelain stoneware. To ensure that these old and very beautiful floors can withstand the onslaught of visitors in the long term, they are impregnated or – as in the case of the particularly porous sandstone – sealed. The anti-slip properties of the floors, which are often polished to a high gloss, are also increased by impregnation.

What our customers say

Waterproofing our garden furniture was a task for our children. It is very reassuring that nothing can happen to them anymore due to the new mixture.

After the treatment of our parasol, the fabric looked like new. Now also nothing drips through and everything underneath stays dry.

The NanoCare impregnation for textiles was the last rescue for my convertible fabric roof from my old Escort. I can now enjoy the summer again and prepare my car for the restoration next winter.
